Please respond directly to the individuals who sent the announcements if you are interested. Vannetta ____________________________________________________________ English teachers needed for fall 2008 in China This announcement comes from Chris Merritt at UW-Madison. IF you have questions beyond what is contained in the note, contact Chris at merritt_christine@hotmail.com The son of the family, Tang Lei (Stanley) is an undergraduate student at Soochow University, Suzhou and a friend of mine. I have visited his home and met his parents. His father, Mr. Tang is director of an English School for high school students and his mother is a middle school teacher-both are very nice and helpful. Chinese students have Chinese teachers that teach grammar but the big need in China is for foreign teachers to get the students to speak in English. Mr. Tang will offer a salary of 4,500 yuan a month (7.01 yuan =$1, so $642/month) plus free accommodation. This is not much compared to US salaries but will go a long way in China. Meals cost me anything from 2yuan (28c) to 4 or 5 yuan and it is very cheap to travel around. If you conservatively saved 3000yuan/month, after 6 months you would have $2,568 to give some idea. Housing will be in the old city of Luoyang, a charming place. Places to visit nearby are the Longman Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Shaolin Temple where you can see the monks perform their wushu. Fascinating places. Semesters in China run from September to the end of January where there is a month long holiday to celebrate the Spring Festival and the Chinese New Year. The 2nd semester runs from March 1st to the middle of July. There is a weeklong mid ?Autumn festival and a week holiday in May. Tang Lei will be going to Australia in May for 4 months on a university program (one of three students selected from Soochow University)-his first time abroad. If anyone is interested please e-mail him () with your CV?s/resume. Good luck! This is a great opportunity and you will be well taken care of. Cheers, Chris Merritt. ****************************************** Two Teachers in Africa Want Class Pen Pals This information comes from Madeline Uranek, Peace Corp Volunteer in Lesotho. Saturday, April 26, 2008 10 a.m. What caused the greatest mass extinction in the history of multi-cellular life? Way back before dinosaurs, 250 million years ago, nearly 90% of all life on Earth died. A Nova Science Now segment will show us a half-dozen plausible theories, then we'll have a discussion with Dr. Tom Williamson. The Museum's newest exhibition on the Triassic, opening on May 17th, will include this extinction event. Refreshments will be served. Tom Williamson, Ph.D. has been Curator of Paleontology at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science for over 14 years. His recent research has looked at the fossil record spanning the Cretaceous/Tertiary extinction event at the end of the Age of Dinosaurs and the beginning of the Age of Mammals. Hosted by KNME-TV5 with support from Lockheed Martin/Sandia National Laboratory. Free, but reservations are required. Call Chris Sanchez at 841-2872, chris.sanchez@state.nm.us Tickets are going fast-get yours now! Jack Horner, Ph.D. Tuesday, May 13, 2008 7 p.m. Noted paleontologist Dr. Jack Horner will be speaking at the Museum in May. He is Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of the Rockies, Regents Professor at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, and is Adjunct Curator at the National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Horner discovered the first dinosaur eggs in the Western Hemisphere, the first evidence of dinosaur colonial nesting, the first evidence of parental care among dinosaurs, and the first dinosaur embryos. Dr. Horner's research covers a wide range of topics about dinosaurs, including their behavior, physiology, ecology, evolution, and growth rate. His recent work has been on soft tissue analysis from a very rare Tyrannosaurus find with actual dinosaur proteins preserved in the core of a leg bone. In 2007, he headed an expedition to the Gobi Desert collecting more than 80 skeletons of Psittacosaurus. He has named several dinosaurs and had two dinosaurs named for him. A recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship "genius grant," Dr. Horner has dyslexia and hopes to inspire young people with learning differences about what can be achieved with persistence and support. He was a technical advisor on all the Jurassic Park movies as well as being the real scientist on which the character Dr. Alan Grant was loosely based. Tickets: $12 adult/ $10 members & seniors/ $5 students plus on-line service charge. Tickets are available on line at: www.NaturalHistoryFoundation.org/horner.html Advance tickets are available online only. Online ticket sales will end 4 hours prior to the talk. Carbon Tip of the Day Start an Anti-Idling Campaign Clean School Bus Curb greenhouse gas emissions in your school parking lot by starting an anti-idling campaign in your school or district. The average school bus burns half a gallon of fuel per hour when idling, emitting 11.1 pounds of carbon and costing school districts money. Diesel and gasoline exhaust also poses a health hazard for teachers and students, particularly those with asthma. Encourage your students to ask their parents to turn off their cars when waiting for them after school, and follow the EPA's tips for starting an anti-idling campaign. The National Science Teachers Association has posted links to our puzzler services on NSTA.org, and we exhibited at the NSTA National Conference in St. Louis where 450 teachers lined up to sign up for our free puzzlers. The teacher feedback has been wonderful, and many teachers suggested that we contact the individual organizations, because you have more grass-roots power to reach other teachers and may want to make them aware of our service. Our company publishes the 27-time award winning "Cogno" science games and books (www.cogno.com). We provide free weekly science and multi-subject puzzlers by email, for grades 3-8. The puzzlers inspire critical thinking and learning in astronomy, forces & motion, and life sciences. Each week, teachers receive an e-mail with new 1-page puzzlers, ready to be photocopied for students. An answer key is included, so no specialized expertise or extra work is required by the teacher.* *For information, examples, or to sign up for free Cogno puzzlers, see www.cogno.com/puzzlers* .* Note: Cogno's Challenge science content was expert-reviewed by scientists at NASA and the SETI Institute. *Would you please consider posting the following paragraph in your newsletter or website, or emailing it to your members? * *Free Weekly Science Puzzlers: *Each week, share with your students a FREEthought-provoking science puzzler, drawn from the award-winning Cogno science board games. You'll receive a weekly e-mail with a fully illustrated one-page puzzler about astronomy, forces & motion and/or life sciences, ready to be photocopied for students. The e-mail message includes the answer and explanation, allowing you to facilitate as much or as little discussion as you like. Recommended for grades 3-8. For information, samples, and to register, see *www.cogno.com/puzzlers*. *Why free? Cogno's mission is to "inspire children to think critically and imaginatively." This mission is at the root of every effort we make, and these puzzlers are part of our effort to further our mission and help raise awareness for Cogno.* Thanks so much! You will receive an excellent overview of biotechnology, both as an educational opportunity and as a professional career. SPACE IS LIMITED!!! You must register for this workshop by emailing Vannetta Perry, vperry@nmt.edu the following information: Name School School District Grade Level Taught Following registration, you will be given specific information concerning the workshop logistics. The workshop is co-sponsored by New Mexico Science Teachers Association, UNM's Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering, UNM's Center for Biomedical Research, and the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network. The presenter for the workshop is Dr. Heather Canavan. Dr. Canavan is an Assistant Professor in the UNM Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering. Her research focuses on the interface between biological systems and manmade materials, or ?biomaterials.? She is also the Founding Director of the UNM Biomaterials Engineering Outreach program directed at K-12 students. The goal of our Outreach program is to initiate an effective and sustainable program for increasing the participation of under-represented minorities in materials science and engineering. Our activities mainly consist of classroom visits similar to the presentation which will be given in this workshop. During these visits, our graduate and undergraduate students give an informal, interactive presentation on "What is Biomedical Engineering?" Most students will find that although they had been unfamiliar with the terminology of BME, they may already have had some knowledge of the subject. Finally, we will help students become bioengineers for a day, engaging students through hands-on experimentation: students build a model of a human joint out of everyday material (e.g., build a "finger" from pieces of chalk, a straw, tongue depressors, etc.). In this workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to learn the content and skills necessary to present this information to their students. Please email Vannetta Perry, vperry@nmt.edu, for registration or questions. Thanks, please pass on to your colleagues.
