English teachers needed for fall 2008 in China
This announcement comes from Chris Merritt at UW-Madison. IF you have
questions beyond what is contained in the note, contact Chris at
merritt_christine at hotmail.com
The son of the family, Tang Lei (Stanley) is an undergraduate student at
Soochow University, Suzhou and a friend of mine. I have visited his home and
met his parents. His father, Mr. Tang is director of an English School for
high school students and his mother is a middle school teacher-both are very
nice and helpful. Chinese students have Chinese teachers that teach grammar
but the big need in China is for foreign teachers to get the students to
speak in English. Mr. Tang will offer a salary of 4,500 yuan a month (7.01
yuan =$1, so $642/month) plus free accommodation. This is not much compared
to US salaries but will go a long way in China. Meals cost me anything from
2yuan (28c) to 4 or 5 yuan and it is very cheap to travel around. If you
conservatively saved 3000yuan/month, after 6 months you would have $2,568 to
give some idea. Housing will be in the old city of Luoyang, a charming
place. Places to visit nearby are the Longman Grottoes, a UNESCO World
Heritage site and the Shaolin Temple where you can see the monks perform
their wushu. Fascinating places.
Semesters in China run from September to the end of January where there is a
month long holiday to celebrate the Spring Festival and the Chinese New
Year. The 2nd semester runs from March 1st to the middle of July. There is a
weeklong mid Autumn festival and a week holiday in May.
Tang Lei will be going to Australia in May for 4 months on a university
program (one of three students selected from Soochow University)-his first
time abroad. If anyone is interested please e-mail him
(<stanleytata at hotmail.com>) with your CVs/resume. Good luck! This is a
great opportunity and you will be well taken care of.
Cheers,
Chris Merritt.

Number of students: maximum 30, prefer 24. Ages 19-22. US grade
equivalent of 11th-12th grades. School year begins Jan, ends Nov, so would
like immediate exchange. Outline some exchange ideas. Some teachers have
found that sending 3 consecutive letters, around different themes, and not
waiting for the 3-4 week mail lag, helps to get the project off to a good
start. Please wait for teachers' confirmation before beginning.
