Rob Dunn will talk about the search for every living thing? and the limits and dimensions of life. We are not close to naming life, studying life, or even knowing the basic kinds of organisms. Dunn?s new book traces the history of human discovery of life on Earth from the earliest classification systems to our efforts at finding every living thing in unpredictable places, and from the unimaginably small to the astoundingly distant. Dunn shares how tough and exhilarating it is to study the natural world, and why it matters. Rob Dunn is an Assistant Professor of Ecology at North Carolina State University. His work has appeared in such popular sources as Natural History, BBC Wildlife and Seed Magazine. His new book, Every Living Thing: Man?s Obsessive Quest to Catalog Life from Nanobacteria to New Monkeys will be available for signing after the talk. $2 public, $1 members, seniors, students Questions/reserve tickets: 841-2872; chris.sanchez@state.nm.us, or at the door before the talk, doors open at 6:15 p.m. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The main activity has students set up a paper and cloth model of the river valley, placing plants and animals in the appropriate environments to show the bosque ecosystem as it was before major human alteration, then changing the pieces around to show how humans have impacted things in the last century. Finally, students conduct restoration projects on the model to see how land managers can maintain as much of the biodiversity and natural processes of the ecosystem without compromising the safety of our communities. The Guide has many activities to be done with students on field trips as well as in the classroom or schoolyard. Topics include the geology of the valley, surface and groundwater, the demands on the river's water budget, natural history information and human influence, several mapping activities and two web quests. A new chapter on "Fire in the Bosque" is an important addition in this time of predicted drought. The final chapter helps teachers plan service-learning projects with their students. A substantial background section and appendices including correlations to the NM state education standards round out the book. Many activities have been translated into Spanish and these can be downloaded in English and Spanish at the Bosque Education Guide website: http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/BEG/index.html Workshop participants will receive the curriculum and an accompanying kit. The workshop and the materials for participants are offered through funding from New Mexico State Parks and Public Education Department Statewide Outdoor Classroom Program and are Co-sponsored by the NM Museum of Natural History & Science and the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park with long-term support from the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Bosque Initiative Group. Plan to be both inside and outside for the workshop, so dress in comfortable clothes for the weather that day. Bring a sack lunch, hat, water and sunscreen. The only cost for participants is the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park's $3.00 per vehicle day-use fee (exact change or check). Got a bus full of kids yearning for an adventure? Wondering how you will connect your students to the community, the beauty, and the mystery of nature? B.L.M.'s El Malpais National Conservation Area near Grants has the answer: curriculum-based programs for kindergarten through college age students. You and your students will be together outdoors seeing first hand the natural processes you've been teaching them in the classroom. Imagine the excitement of appreciating the volcanos erupting, and the wonder of standing with one foot on a Jurassic desert dune and the other on a Cretaceous shore with 50 million years of missing sediment in between. Our programs are crafted to inspire students to see and appreciate science in nature from the adaptations of plants to those of the ancestral peoples. For the abstract thinkers we'll delve into how modern peoples' adaptations compare. Whether it's a kindergarten scavenger hunt for local life or a college ornithology outing, each class enjoys a personally tailored program from our education specialists tuned to your curriculum and the New Mexico State Science Standards. Come enjoy our park rangers' outdoor programs. Schools within a 90 mile radius of Grants can ask about an in-classroom program too. Program duration runs from 20 minutes to all day. The agreement between the Trust and the Servants of the Paraclete for the 15000 square foot facility will avoid spending millions of taxpayer dollars on new construction and environmental impact studies. The deal will also accelerate the implementation of a robust science and education program years ahead of schedule. ?Before this opportunity came along we were faced with the prospect of impacting the Preserve environment and requesting $10-15 million of public funding during very difficult economic times,? said Valles Caldera Trust Executive Director, Gary Bratcher. ?Now we are providing an exceptional program that will accommodate clientele from academia, public schools, and the private sector without that taxpayer expenditure.? The Board of Trustees authorized $306,000 from the Trust?s revenue account to purchase furniture, laboratory and teaching equipment for the facility. Revenue account funds are generated from visitors? activity and recreation fees rather than appropriated tax dollars from Congress. The Trust also developed an operational financial plan to support the 25 bedroom facility and programs which will eventually achieve 100% cost recovery. In addition to lodging and food service revenues, supplementary funding will come from school program expenses defrayed via grants such as those being prepared in cooperation with New Mexico universities and colleges. ?Numerous preliminary programs in both formal and informal education activities have been conducted since 2003? said VCT Science and Education Director, Dr. Bob Parmenter. ?But those programs were limited by the lack of laboratory, classroom and lodging facilities needed for long term scientific study. Now the Trust is ready to offer permanent programs to a national audience.? The overall education program will focus on science-related aspects of the Valles Caldera National Preserve (including geology, ecology, wildlife and fisheries management, range management and livestock husbandry, forestry, biodiversity, climate change, hydrology and archaeology). However, studies will also include a wide range of other disciplines (art, photography, history, literature, poetry, music) for which the Valles Caldera provides an inspirational environment. The ?clientele? will fall into four main groups: (1) public school students (elementary through high school) and college/university students in formal educational classes; (2) general public participants in informal workshops and theme-oriented or special-topic classes; (3) organized volunteer groups (e.g., the VCNP Amigos, Sierra Club, etc.) that participate in ongoing science projects on the Preserve; (4) private, corporate, NGO, or government retreats and training programs. ?The Trust believes that the development of Valles Caldera education programs, with suitable support facilities, will provide an outstanding experience for the public,? said Bratcher. ?We remain committed to ensure that the Preserve becomes a sustainable national resource in research and educational programs for science, natural resource management, and other academic disciplines.? The Valles Caldera Trust education and conference facility is expected to open for business by early 2010.
