Junior Scholars is a summer employment opportunity that provides students the chance to work with AFRL scientists and engineers on a variety of programs. This year's deadline for candidates to apply is February 16, 2009. Applicants must be at least entering Juniors in High School through Juniors in College. Junior Scholars intends to be a bridge between our AFRL La Luz Academy, which includes students through high school, and our Space and Directed Energy Scholars program for university undergraduate and graduate students. Successful applicants will be paired with AFRL Directed Energy Directorate and Space Vehicles Directorate scientists at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. Last years' tasks included working at our Adaptive Optics, High Power Microwave, Satellite Assessment Center, and Integrated Space Experiments facilities on such projects as atmospheric reflection and nanosatellite technology. At the end of the summer, students were required to present a paper and poster to be reviewed by AFRL personnel. The benefit for students working with our scientists goes beyond acquiring scientific and technical knowledge. Students interact with senior scientists at lectures and are also mentored while working on their assigned tasks. Junior Scholars get an "eye opening" introduction to the working world of math, science, and engineering that allows them to determine if this is the direction they want to head in their careers. And they get practical day-to-day experience in how to function in meetings, and acquire workplace discipline and flexibility. Fifteen students were employed by the lab during the summer of 2008. They came from several New Mexico high schools and colleges, including New Mexico Tech, Penn State University, and Texas Christian University as well as Hope Christian High School, St. Pius High School, and even a home schooled student. In the upcoming 2009 cycle, there may be as many as 30 slots available. For more information, contact the Junior Scholars coordinator, Ms. Jennifer Donaldson, at 505-853-7676. For application packets, please send a request to PTi@kirtland.af.mil Please share this information with any students you know who might be interested in this opportunity. They have been working for five years?way beyond the expectations of their designers, and now, we can actually track the Rovers as they move across the planet with new images from the HiRISE orbiter. Dr. Larry Crumpler is Research Curator at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. He is a Scientist on the NASA-Mars Exploration Rover Mission and on HiRISE, part of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is now providing high-resolution images of Mars. He has been having a great time being a ?field geologist? on another planet. Come hear some of the stories of this groundbreaking expedition on Mars from our local expert. http://www.nmnaturalhistory.org/edu_lectures.html [The Museum will host two opportunities to learn about the Red Planet, but the first opportunity is FULL-no more places are available for January 24th.] Public Lecture Tuesday, February 10, 2009 7 p.m. Dr. Crumpler will present an overview of what we?ve learned during five years on Mars. Admission is $7 adults, $6 members/seniors and $4 students Purchase in advance to guarantee your seats at www.naturalhistoryfoundation.org or at the door (if available) before the talk. The Call of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker -Rediscovering the Holy Grail of Birds- Bobby R. Harrison and Tim Gallagher Wednesday, February 18, 2009 7 p.m. For more than 60 years, every potential sighting of an ivory-billed woodpecker was met with ridicule and scorn. Bobby Harrison and Tim Gallagher refused to accept the grim conclusion of most scientists that the ivory-bill was extinct. A 1972 report started them both on a life-long quest to find the phantom of the bayou. They began traveling through the South, interviewing people who claimed to have seen this ghost bird of the shadowy swamp. If a sighting seemed credible, they hit the swamp, wading through hip-deep, boot-sucking mud and canoeing through turgid, mud-brown bayous, home to deadly cottonmouths. On one of these trips, checking a recent sighting by an Arkansas kayaker, an unmistakable ivory-bill flew past at close range of their canoe. This sighting quickly led to the largest search ever launched to find a rare bird and ultimately to the announcement in April 2005 of the rediscovery of the species. The two men in that canoe will be in Albuquerque to tell us about the ivory-bills? rediscovery, claims of misidentification, current search efforts, evidence that has been found in other states, and Bobby?s unpublished ivory-billed woodpecker video shot on September 4, 2004. For 33 years they sought the holy grail of birds. Their story is a first hand account of its rediscovery, a story that you will not want to miss. Bobby Harrison is the founder and president of the newly established Ivory-billed Woodpecker Foundation Inc., dedicated to locating, recovery, protection, management, preservation and conservation of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker and other rare, endangered and threatened species. He is an award-winning nature photographer, writer, and educator based in Huntsville, Alabama. Tim Gallagher is a lifelong bird fanatic. An award-winning writer and photographer, he is editor-in-chief of Living Bird magazine. He is the author of Wild Bird Photography, Parts Unknown, and The Grail Bird, the story of Tim and Bobby's long search for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker and its rediscovery in 2004. His most recent book, Falcon Fever, details another passion that has driven him since childhood: the ancient art of falconry. Admission is $7 adults, $6 members/seniors and $4 students Purchase in advance to guarantee your seats at www.naturalhistoryfoundation.org or at the door (if available) before the talk. Evolving A Genius: The Extraordinary Early Life of Charles Darwin a special talk to honor the 200th birthday of naturalist Charles Darwin. Doug Schwartz, Ph.D. Thursday, March 5, 2009 7 p.m. Charles Darwin was an indifferent student well into his undergraduate years at the universities of Edinburgh and Cambridge. Given this undistinguished background, how did he become transformed into a man of exceptional intellectual insight and produce a theory so powerful that it dramatically altered our view of the living world? Dr. Schwartz traces the unique set of events that ultimately laid the foundation for Darwin?s distinctive genius. Dr. Schwartz, is an archaeologist by profession, former President and current Senior Scholar at the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe, President of the Society of American Archeology and Chairman of the Jane Goodall African Wildlife Institute. He has had a long-term research interest in the origins of Charles Darwin?s creativity. He has traveled worldwide to sites Darwin visited, showing the basis for Darwin?s ideas. Schwartz in ?retirement? is involved in writing, lecturing, publishing, and traveling. In the past year, his professional involvement has taken him to Ireland, Portugal, Cuba, Spain, Algeria, and Tunisia. To add to his many honors, he was named a ?Luminaria? by the New Mexico Community Foundation in 2007. After a dramatic introduction, visitors can explore the Earth's history in four sections: "Gems and Minerals", "Rocks and Mining", "Plate Tectonics and Volcanoes", and "The Solar System". Each section uses interactive graphics, demonstrations, photographs, and other rich visual materials to take the geologically curious into the world of the inner Earth, plate tectonics, meteorites, and a host of related topics. Moving along, the "GeoGallery" area lets users explore the database here for records of various gems, minerals, rocks, and volcanoes. Visitors can look around via an interactive map or they can just even click "Random Slide Show". The site is rounded out by several fun offerings, including screen savers, screen wallpapers, and some e-postcards. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ellen Loehman loehman@aps.edu From jeraldcross at comcast.net Sun Jan 25 10:48:01 2009 From: jeraldcross at comcast.net (Jerry Cross) Date: Sun Jan 25 10:48:57 2009 Subject: [NMScience] Regional Science Fair judges needed for Friday, March 20 at UNM In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <04923594C9794059916C15F86A1A7010@JerryPC> New version of ACD High School Chemistry guide available for downloadI am the ASTA coordinator of judges and need 15-20 more judges. I have paid leave available for 15 APS teachers who work all day. Volunteers from other districts/ retirees/friends/neighbors are welcome to work all or part of the day. See letter below. Central New Mexico Science and Engineering Research Challenge on March 20 The Albuquerque Science Teachers Association (ASTA) has long judged at the Central New Mexico Science and Engineering Research Challenge (Science Fair to us old-timers). Last year we judged the entire Junior Division in all 16 judging categories, which was over 400 projects. We also judged and awarded almost 70 of the Special Awards in the afternoon, giving out prizes from sponsors who could not judge their own awards. And we did it with only 26 judges. We could have used 35 or more. In past years, APS has provided a day of paid leave for the APS teachers who helped out. They allotted up to 20 paid leaves, but we never got more than a dozen or so. One argument is that teachers don't like having to take a day and prepare lesson plans, etc. For the rest of the judges, I depend on the kindness of strangers, friends, relatives, retirees, etc. APS will offer paid professional leave for up to 20 APS folks who work all day for me. I have 15 positions available at the moment. I am also grateful for non-APS teachers, but cannot offer you professional leave. This year the Regional Judging at UNM is on Friday, March 20. Judging starts at 8:00 am, in Johnson Gym at UNM, and goes until 3:30, or until we get done. Other reasons for you and/or your colleagues to judge are: 1. This is an excellent professional development activity to put on your PDP 2. Judging will give you insight on assigning and advising your future student's projects 3. Judging Middle and High School students can be fun 4. Breakfast, snacks, and lunch are provided If you want to help out, please reply ASAP, and give me your contact info-phone numbers and emails-work and home. APS leave information for APS employees will come later. And feel free to forward this to colleagues, friends, relatives, retirees, etc. The more judges we have, we don't get done any earlier; we can spend more time interviewing students. I thank you for your past help, and hope you will continue or join us. Any questions, leads on judges, or comments, feel free to contact me. But please don't call during my duty day. Thank you.
