The website for this entirely web-based challenge, www.wecanchange.com , is host to lots of kid-friendly activities such as virtual interactive labs, an eco-footprint game, an environmental IQ quiz, online journals, video clips -- plus many more resources for both students and adult advisers. Teams of two to three students in sixth through eighth grade, under the mentorship of a teacher or adult supervisor, will identify an environmental issue in their community, research the issue using scientific investigation, and create a replicable green solution using web-based curriculum tools powered by Discovery Education. "Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge" submissions from middle school students will be accepted through March 15, 2009. A total of 51 teams representing each state and the District of Columbia will be selected as state finalists and an additional 50 teams will be eligible for honorable mention awards. Three of the state finalist teams will be selected as national finalists, and one of those will be named the inaugural grand prize-winner. The Siemens Foundation, Discovery Education, and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) have partnered on the "Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge" to educate, empower, and engage students, teachers, and communities to become "Agents of Change" in improving their communities nationwide. The initiative expands to elementary schools in 2009 and to high schools in 2010. The Siemens Foundation provides more than $7 million annually in support of educational initiatives in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math in the United States. Triangle Coalition member, NSTA, is the largest organization in the world dedicated to promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all. NSTA works to improve science education and increase student learning by providing resources and training that support and enhance quality teaching. Student Asteroid Teams: A New Program at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science -Have you ever looked at the stars at night and wondered where they came from? -Have you ever seen a shooting star and wondered about its journey? -Have you ever thought about how a museum exhibit is designed, created, and brought to life? If so, this exciting new program sponsored by the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science may be for you! We are looking for motivated 7th graders who are interested in learning about and developing a museum exhibit on space and asteroids. The Student Asteroid Team at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque will have the opportunity to develop a unique team identity, research questions, and goals. You?ll also develop the tools to exercise your creativity in designing projects to explain the potential impacts of asteroids on Earth, including mass-extinction asteroids that ended the age of the dinosaurs, and the potential effects of asteroids on the Earth today. All 7th graders with an interest in science or being creative are welcome to apply, although participation is limited to 10-14 students. This will be a great opportunity to socialize and learn new ideas about the solar system and museum design in a focused, hands-on setting. Our small group will meet two times a month at the Museum. We?ll meet until the end of this school year, and through 8th grade. This will be a hands-on program involving activities and field trips both in and outside the museum: to the planetarium, observatory, and with local experts who will guide us in becoming more knowledgeable about asteroids and the universe. We?ll also learn the inside story on how to put together a museum exhibit by going behind the scenes and touring the museum collections and getting advice from museum staff, such as experts on the Mars Rover Expedition. Students will be working with Senior Education Specialist Tish Morris, a veteran educator at the Museum and Program Coordinator, and Jen Richter, who has worked with the Museum?s Student Ecology Research Program, Caf? Scientifique, and Junior Docents. Meetings will be primarily on Sundays, 3-5 p.m. March 29, April 11(tentative) April 26, May 10, and a late May evening star party date to be determined. The new modules integrate real-world nanoscale science and engineering research into high school chemistry and physical science courses. Each standards-based module includes teacher guides, assessments, student activities, and experiments. Using topics normally taught in high school science, students engage in nanoscale science and technology concepts within a real-world context. The first module released, "Investigating Static Forces in Nature: The Mystery of the Gecko," is designed for physical science classrooms and includes videos, animation, and interactive technologies. Instructional materials for the module were developed by McREL in collaboration with master science teachers and nanoscale science and technology researchers. Throughout the four-year development project, materials were vetted and evaluated thoroughly in high school classrooms. The module is available online . McREL is a Denver-based, nationally recognized, private, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving education for all students through applied research, product development, and service. In kindergarten through grade 12 schools across the nation, students and school personnel use chemicals every day to learn, to create, and to maintain facilities. But when chemicals aren't carefully managed, they can put students and school personnel at risk from spills, fires, and other accidental exposures. I am happy to announce that, with the release of a new educational video, Safe Chemical Management in Your School, the Environmental Protection Agency and its partners are making kindergarten through grade 12 schools safer places to learn, work, and play. EPA has teamed up with schools and community partners in Rhode Island, Colorado, and Wyoming to bring models of responsible chemical management programs to schools across the country. For more information on responsible chemical management in schools and to watch the new video, Safe Chemical Management in Your School please visit: www.epa.gov/SC3. In addition to identifying steps to build a responsible chemical management program, the video features real life examples of schools and their community partners that are working towards permanent chemical management solutions. This has been a great program! I'm not sure what the current program is, but the last cohort worked alongside Sandia researchers and did lots of field trips and guest speakers. They paid for our time, and provided both professional development and classroom supply money. If you choose a lob other than Sandia, I think you have to pay for your own housing. Check it out. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ellen Loehman loehman@aps.edu From knollmalva at comcast.net Sun Mar 29 09:00:05 2009 From: knollmalva at comcast.net (Malva Knoll) Date: Sun Mar 29 09:01:40 2009 Subject: [NMScience] Teacher Invitation to National Museum of Nuclear Science & History Grand Opening Message-ID: Skipped content of type multipart/alternative-------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
