HOT TOPIC ? DIALOGING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE
Celebrate Earth Science Week
Presented at four locations around New Mexico in October:
@ The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2009.
@ Macey Center at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, New Mexico from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2009.
@ Jornada Building at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2009.
@ The Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos, New Mexico from 5:15-7:15p.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2009.
Please join us for an evening of discovery and dialogue, hosted by the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, about one of today?s hottest topics: climate change. David Herring, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will present the science behind climate change: where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. Herring will provide background information on past climate, current climate trends, evidence for man-made contributions to climate change, and scientists? progress toward modeling future climate scenarios on a global, regional, and local level. After the presentation, join us for a community dialogue about climate change over dessert! Dessert will include pastries and other tasty treats as well as coffee, tea, and juice. In this informal atmosphere you can ask David Herring questions and discuss your own thoughts about climate change with local community members. Is climate change occurring? What is humanity?s role? How do we sort through the different pictures scientists paint of future climate possibilities on our planet?
Herring serves as Director of Communications within NOAA?s Climate Program Office, based in Silver Spring, Maryland. Part of his job is to help people understand the science of climate change through programs and web resources and how they may use NOAA?s data and information resources to make more informed decisions in their lives and livelihoods. He previously worked as project manager for education and public outreach within the Earth Sciences Division at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center, where he also worked on NASA?s Terra Mission, Earth Observatory, Visible Earth, and NEO projects.
Questions: visit www.NMnaturalhistory.org or contact Eileen Everett, Climate Change Educator, at 505-841-2837 or EileenM.Everett@state.nm.us

Subject: 2009-20010 Internet Science and Technology Fair
The University of Central Florida 's College of Engineering and Computer
Science seeks your assistance in alerting science, technology,
engineering and math teachers in your state to the thirteenth annual
Internet Science and Technology Fair (ISTF).
The ISTF is a national technology literacy program that last year
involved 180 student teams from multiple states and two countries. It
offers students in grades 3 through 12 an opportunity to work on-line
with technical advisors from corporations, federal laboratories, and
academic research centers. Students research how National Critical
Technology applications may be applied to real-world problems while
adhering to content guidelines based on national science content
standards. The ISTF combines science inquiry and the Internet while
helping students develop interpersonal and critical thinking skills,
such as teaming, communicating, researching, analyzing, writing, and web
development.
The program begins in October and ends in February, when each student
team's research findings are presented in a web-page format. A national
panel of scientists, engineers and teachers judge teams' final projects
on-line with certificate awards from the National Medal of Technology
and Innovation Program at the US Department of Commerce. From now
through November, education professionals (including but not limited to
science, math, and technology teachers) in your state are encouraged to
enroll student teams. Newcomers can
access information specifically designed to better understand what is
involved. Once a decision is made to participate, teachers may set up an
ISTF Teacher Account at My ISTF and
begin enrolling student teams.
Again, please share this information with your elementary, middle and
high school science, math and technology teachers and other educational
professionals who might be interested. A one-page flyer
is available for
distribution purposes. Should you have any questions, please contact my
office .
Respectfully,

NASA Solar System Ambassadors Program
Do you love space? Are you adept at sharing your love of the stars with
the public? If so, here's a chance to join a growing network of space
enthusiasts who have volunteered as NASA Solar System Ambassadors.
Ambassadors from the states of Delaware and North Dakota especially are
needed to represent those states.
The application period is being extended through Oct. 16, 2009.
Ambassadors are U.S. citizens selected from all 50 states, Washington,
D.C., and Puerto Rico, or U.S. citizens serving U.S. audiences abroad.
The program is one of the longest-running NASA volunteer outreach
projects.
Each ambassador receives online training from NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory and educational materials supplied by various space missions,
such as the next Mars rover -- Curiosity. Curiosity will check to see
whether Mars has been favorable for supporting microbial life and
preserving evidence of life. The rover is scheduled to launch in October
2011.

Lecture
The Forester?s Log
Mary Stuever
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 7 p.m.
Mary Stuever, Fire Ecologist and Forester has spent two decades working in the Southwest. In that time, U.S. forests have faced serious crises: the threat of impending wildfires on residential areas, insect outbreaks, and forest animals? loss of habitat among them. Stuever documents the challenges and changes in forestry from her unique view as a woman in a male-dominated profession. Fires can be beneficial, but with more trees and fewer prescribed burns, destructive fires have escalated. The idea of using fire for good is just one of the changes that have come to forestry recently. She will share her work along the Rio Grande bosque and across the high deserts and mountains of Arizona exploring the relationships between land and its people.
Mary Stuever is a forester for the State of New Mexico. Her syndicated column, ?The Forester?s Log,? appears in newspapers and communities scattered throughout the U.S. and Canada. Her essays have appeared in A Mile in Her Boots; she is co-editor of Field Guide to the Sandia Mountains.
Her new book, The Forester?s Log, published by UNM Press, will be available for purchase and signing after the talk.
Cost: $5 (public and members)
Questions: Chris Sanchez at 841-2872 or email: chris.sanchez@state.nm.us
Purchase in advance to guarantee your seats at: www.naturalhistoryfoundation.org or at the door before the talk. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

Project WET
Worldwide Water Education
Educate. Empower. Act. The mission of Project WET is to reach children,
parents, educators and communities of the world with water education. We
invite you to join us in educating children about the most precious resource
on the planet - water.
Dear Project WET Friends and Colleagues:
October 15, 2009 - today - is Global Hand Washing Day.
Hand washing is the simplest, most effective way of preventing germs from
spreading. Help Project WET spread this important message by forwarding our
Wash Your Hands Poster
to teachers,
parents, administrators and child care and health care providers. We suggest
printing this poster and hanging it on fridges, in bathrooms and on bulletin
boards where others can see it. Because washing your hands helps you avoid
catching a cold, the flu or other infectious diseases, hand washing is an
important healthy habit!
And, be sure to read Improving Health and Hygiene for the African Child:
Project
WET's WASH Education Program to learn how Project WET is
making a difference by educating about healthy habits like hand washing.
Sincerely,
The Project WET Foundation

Teachers and Students
Message-ID: <002201ca4ea3$9041fd40$b0c5f7c0$@com>
EIA Releases New Energy Education Resource for Teachers and Students
Energy Explained, a new website recently launched by the U.S. Energy
Information Administration (EIA), celebrates Energy Awareness Month with the
most comprehensive energy education resource available from the U.S.
Government.
Energy fuels life, economies, and the entire solar system, yet few students
understand the importance of energy and its role in our lives. Energy
Explained clearly conveys the facts and latest data about energy. The site
is full of graphs, data, and scientific information that can add depth to
high school curricula in Science, Math, or Social Studies. The site
explains where gasoline comes from, what determines the price of
electricity, how much renewable energy the United States uses, and hundreds
of other energy topics.
Visit www.eia.doe.gov/energyexplained to use Energy Explained in your
classroom.
Energy Explained allows easy navigation between major energy topics:
. What Is Energy?
. Use of Energy
. Energy and the Environment
. Nonrenewable Energy Sources
. Renewable Energy Sources
. Secondary Energy Sources
Note to teachers: Some of the content in Energy Explained also appears on
Energy Kids. The content in Energy Explained is more in-depth and includes
additional graphs and links to further reading.
For high-resolution files of the Energy Explained logo or graphics, contact
Jonathan Cogan at 202-586-8800 or jcogan@eia.doe.gov.
The product described in this press release was prepared by the U.S. Energy
Information Administration (EIA), the statistical and analytical agency
within the U.S. Department of Energy. By law, EIA's data, analyses, and
forecasts are independent of approval by any other officer or employee of
the United States Government. The views in the product and press release
therefore should not be construed as representing those of the Department or
